taken in by the hype

Went to the Legion of Honor in SF today to see the Leonardo da Vinci exhibit I had seen advertised everywhere.  I found I was a little disappointed.  Only 9 pages of his sketches.  The room was small, the lighting bad.  And while it is cool that they are still around, the 500+ year old paper is now a deep ochre and the pencil lines almost too faint to see.  I wandered around the museum's permanent collections afterwards, visiting favorites.  Was struck this time by the litte Degas: The Impressario (my sketch of which is above). Clearly a mini sketch that Edgar never meant to be a museum piece - it is oil on PAPERBOARD, uncentered, and contains scribbles in the corner!  I LOVE IT!
